Getting to Pemba
Island
About Pemba
PembaRegions
Pemba is the second largest island of the
Spice Archipelago, named Al-khudra, "The Green Island" by the Arabic
mariners in reverence of the profusion of lush fertility they
encountered after their journey south along the arid coastline. It is
definitely one of the jewels of the Indian Ocean and is patiently
waiting to be explored. The tourism industry in Pemba is still in its
infancy and infrastructure is therefore quite basic, although this is
slowly beginning to change with a few exclusive resorts springing up on
the island. The epitome of a tropical paradise, Pemba has green valleys
with rice paddies and palm trees and clove plantations that shade the
roads. Vistas of the Indian Ocean are pleasant surprises as they are
presented through the peaks and depths of Pemba's hilly terrain.
Landing at Pemba is not quite the same
experience as Unguja since there are fewer cars, people and bustle.
There are several charter airlines that will fly to Pemba for a large
group or may sell you a seat on a scheduled flight.
Long rains are March to May, cool dry
season is June to October, short rains October to November and hot dry
season December to March. Average daily temperature is about 80F / 26C,
with 7-8 hours off sunshine
